The BSP wishes all its members far and wide a happy New Year. Please read the message from our President David Whitaker
Message from your President
When I was asked to prepare a message for the members of the British Society of Perfumers and sat down to write, I felt like the Queen must feel each year, having to prepare for her Christmas broadcast. But thinking about it, she probably has people who write it for her!
Hard to believe that I am already half-way through my term of office. During this time and this calendar year the pace of change seems to continue to accelerate, maybe that’s an age thing?
We have seen some significant changes to the Industry this year affecting UK based people and many members. The most obvious and significant are the acquisitions by Givaudan of Drom, Fragrance Oils and Ungerer. This Industry consolidation is not really a new phenomenon however the speed with which these three were announced was something I can not say I have witnessed in my 32 years in the Industry. Apart from the obvious changes for the employees concerned, there are other impacts people may not see or be aware of. We have society members working for suppliers to fragrance houses who have sometimes significant amounts of business with these companies. It is a time of uncertainty and I send my best wishes to all involved for what the future brings.
The society continues to grow in terms of new members which is always pleasing to see but it remains a difficult task for council to organise and have events suitably funded, and so I must thank all of the council for their support in helping to bring forward ideas for events. It continues to be a challenge to find the hosting of good events in suitable locations and we need your support to attend functions to continue to make them viable.
In the new year we have our joint meetings with the BSF and SCS, followed in March by the Workshop Weekend, this year being held just outside Cambridge. Furthermore, the consumer products evening is in early April and then we will have the AGM and ODS in May.
Council have been working on modernising the constitution of the BSP as it is outdated in parts and we will be bringing that forward to members for a vote in 2020.
For those who enjoy a festive event in December, I have to apologise that we were unable to hold one on 12th December in London. Two things happened with respect to that date; the speaker I had lined up to come for the event backed out, and that combined with the calling of the election led me to believe that the attendance for any other idea we might formulate would be low.
I want to close by thanking all of those who have already supported the Presidents Charity for this year. Those of you who attended the Gala Dinner in May are unlikely to forget Steve Mallen’s speech about the MindEd Trust (http://www.themindedtrust.org/) a charity he set up to support helping young people struggling with mental illness. As I have repeated at all events this season, this is a charity which is not just there to raise money but bring awareness about mental health and bring the subject into the open. We all know someone! Let’s take the festive season to reflect, as its not necessarily a joyful time for all as we may think. Please visit the website and if you wish to support Steve’s Trust, it all goes to helping young people.
To finally bring the message back to a festive theme, I do wish everyone a healthy and happy holiday period, happy Christmas for all that celebrate it and wishing all a happy and successful 2020. Hope to see more of you at future events, it is your society, you get out of it as much as you put in!
