Membership of the Society
Membership is open to all applicants who, in the opinion of the BSP Council, meet all the necessary requirements as stated in its Constitution. Each application will be judged strictly on its own merit and includes the contribution the applicant may make in promoting the aims of the Society within the fragrance industry.
Aims of the Society
- To promote the interests of individuals actively engaged as perfumers or in other associated roles.
- To recognise the status of perfumers and those working in associated roles within the fragrance industry by seeking wider recognition of perfumery as a profession.
- To encourage the education and development of perfumers and associated professionals working within the fragrance industry.
- To bring perfumers, fragrance industry professionals and fragrance enthusiasts together for the purpose of discussing perfumery subjects of mutual interest and the exchange of views and items of mutual interest.
- To arrange meetings for the purpose of education through lectures, presentations, events, and discussions.
Membership Grades and Fees for 2020-2021
Honorary Member = No charge applicable
Full (Perfumer) Member = £60.00
Associate Perfumer Member = £60.00

- Honorary Member
Upon the recommendation of the Council, the Society may, by a majority vote at the Annual General Meeting, elect an individual as ‘Honorary Member’ in recognition of their services to the Society and / or perfumery industry. In a similar manner, Honorary Membership may also be conferred upon fellow Societies.
- Full (Perfumer) Member
At the date of the application for Full Membership, applicants shall have spent at least five years as a generally accepted perfumer who practices the art and science of perfume creation in a recognised professional setting, following industry best practice guidelines. The applicant will have followed a formal perfumery training program within a commercial organisation lasting a minimum of 2 years. The commercial organisation must be associated with IFRA through membership as a Full, Associate or Consultant, and one that follows the IFRA Code of Practice.
Application for Full membership is open to perfumers only. The application must be sponsored by two Full Members who are known personally to the applicant in a professional capacity.
- Associate Perfumer Member
At the date of application applicants shall have spent at least five years practicing the art and science of a perfumer for a company that is associated with IFRA through membership as a full, associate or consultant, and follows the IFRA code of practice. An Associate Perfumer is defined as someone who has learnt to create fragrances through a non-standard training route which is based primarily around olfactive creation, and whose primary source of income comes from working as a perfumer.
Application for Associate Perfumer membership must be sponsored by one Full Member and one Associate or Associate Perfumer Member, who are known personally to the applicant in a professional capacity.
- Associate Member
At the date of the application for Associate Membership, applicants shall be over twenty years of age and shall have spent at least two years continuously employed in a qualifying capacity. Associate Membership will be open to those who contribute to perfumery in a technical and / or olfactory capacity: technical and marketing consultants, commercial and technical personnel, such activities forming the greater part of their employment. Application for Associate members must be sponsored by one Full and one Associate or Associate Perfumer Member in the fragrance industry and as such can be shown to the satisfaction of Council.
- Student Member
Those undertaking a full-time course of studying the art and science of perfumery, perfumery business studies, or other appropriate science related discipline, validated by the Society at a recognised university or other establishment of further education. Those who, in the opinion of Council, have gained the required academic qualifications and are actively seeking to gain approved experience to qualify for admission to Membership or Associate Membership of the Society.
Please note, Student Membership is temporary; it only covers the period that a potential candidate for Associate Membership is in education. All Student Memberships must be reviewed at the end of the completed course. Re-election is only permitted if the membership committee is satisfied the Student’s intention is to become a Member / Associate Member of the Society. Ultimately the decision subject to the discretion of Council.
- Friend of the Society
Applicants must be over 18 years of age and can demonstrate a genuine interest in the Fragrance industry. It includes those who are currently employed in a fragrance related role, but who do not currently meet criteria for another level of membership. This membership grade is also considered for those who do not work in a fragrance related role but are keen fragrance enthusiasts who are actively seeking to learn more about the Fragrance industry.
