Membership of the Society

Membership is open to all applicants who, in the opinion of the BSP Council, meet all the necessary requirements as stated in its Constitution. Each application will be judged strictly on its own merit and includes the contribution the applicant may make in promoting the aims of the Society within the fragrance industry.

Aims of the Society

  • To promote the interests of individuals actively engaged as perfumers or in other associated roles.
  • To recognise the status of perfumers and those working in associated roles within the fragrance industry by seeking wider recognition of perfumery as a profession.
  • To encourage the education and development of perfumers and associated professionals working within the fragrance industry.
  • To bring perfumers, fragrance industry professionals and fragrance enthusiasts together for the purpose of discussing perfumery subjects of mutual interest and the exchange of views and items of mutual interest.
  • To arrange meetings for the purpose of education through lectures, presentations, events, and discussions.

In a similar manner, Honorary Membership may also be conferred upon fellow Societies.

  • Full (Perfumer) Member

The commercial organisation must be associated with IFRA through membership as a Full, Associate or Consultant, and one that follows the IFRA Code of Practice.

  • Associate Perfumer Member
At the date of application applicants shall have spent at least five years practicing the art and science of a perfumer for a company that is associated with IFRA through membership as a full, associate or consultant, and follows the IFRA code of practice. An Associate Perfumer is defined as someone who has learnt to create fragrances through a non-standard training route which is based primarily around olfactive creation, and whose primary source of income comes from working as a perfumer.

Application for Associate Perfumer membership must be sponsored by one Full Member and one Associate or Associate Perfumer Member, who are known personally to the applicant in a professional capacity.

  • Associate Member
At the date of the application for Associate Membership, applicants shall be over twenty years of age and shall have spent at least two years continuously employed in a qualifying capacity. Please note, Student Membership is temporary; it only covers the period that a potential candidate for Associate Membership is in education. All Student Memberships must be reviewed at the end of the completed course.
